Wedding Trivia

Did you know …

  • The number of marriages in the United States has held steady at about 2.4 million every year for the past 20 years. One third of them are remarriages.

  • The average bride is 24 years old and the average groom is 28. We guess women still prefer older men.

  • Three quarters of all brides receive a diamond engagement ring. Of those, two thirds are involved in picking out their ring, while 3% don’t trust their fiancé and actually pick it themselves.

  • Do you know why the engagement ring and wedding band are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand? Because the ancient Egyptians thought that the "vein of love" ran from this finger directly to the heart. It’s a good thing they didn’t think the vein of love was in your nose !

  • The average engagement period is 16 months, which is up from 11 months in 1990. We all know you just cannot plan a wedding in less than a year !

  • 10.2% of weddings take place in August making it the top month for weddings. Now isn’t it funny that 9 months later in May is when the most babies are born !

  • The average wedding in the United States costs between $20,000 and $25,000 with 150 guests. However the average cost of a wedding in Beverly Hills California is $102,000. Think Tori Spelling !

  • The average second wedding costs $12,000, but re-marrying couples spend nearly double their first time counterparts on honeymoons. They know what is important !

  • In the United States, an average of 189 guests attend each wedding. You just have to invite great uncle Fred !

The tradition of bridesmaids dressing the same as each other and in similar style to the bride comes from ancient times when it was believed that evil spirits have a difficult time distinguishing which one is the bride and putting a hex on her. If you’ve ever been a bridesmaid, there is so much to say here, that we will leave the comments to you !

  • How many bridesmaids to have? … The most frequent number is 4 ( including the maid of honor. ) In addition, more than half of all weddings have a flower girl, and a ring bearer. Just hope your husband-to-be doesn’t have 4 sisters !

  • "Thrice a bridesmaid, never a bride" is an old charm that can be broken by being a bridesmaid seven times. It also gives you a great dress for every day of the week !

  • Queen Victoria made white the bridal color of choice when she wore it to wed Prince Albert in 1840. She couldn’t have picked black or brown?

  • In the rhyme "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue", "blue" is symbolic of the blood of royalty, since both the bride and the groom were once considered to be "royal" on their wedding day. Bet you just thought it was the only color that rhymed !

  • The veil dates back to ancient Rome, when it was flame-yellow, always worn over the face, and called a flammeum. We are not making this up … Thank goodness they changed that name !

  • The kiss that is given by the bride to the groom at the end of the wedding ceremony originates from the earliest times when the couple would actually make love for the first time under the eyes of half the village ! OMG !!! I think they have a different name for those kinds of weddings nowadays !
