Wedding Traditions
In a Christian wedding, the bride usually wears a white dress, a veil, and carries and bouquet while the groom normally wears a suit or
tuxedo and a flower boutonniere. Bridesmaids, groomsmen, a flower girl, and a ring bearer attend the bride and groom. The ceremony includes
a call to worship, the giving away of the bride, the exchange of vows, a ring ceremony, singing of hymns, prayers, the pronouncement of marriage,
and finally the kiss, which seals the nuptial agreement.
A Jewish wedding starts with the signing of the ketubah, the wedding contract. Then the wedding continues with the procession of the
groomsmen, the groom, attended by both parents, the bridesmaids, and finally the bride, also attended by both parents. The ceremony takes
place under a chuppah, which is a decorated cloth cover that symbolizes the new home of the bride and groom. A Rabbi recites prayers and
the couple exchanges rings. The Rabbi then reads the ketubah.
At the end of the ceremony, the groom smashes a glass with his foot and the
guests yell, "Mazel Tov" (good luck)! The breaking of the glass has several interpretations. One interpretation is that the marriage will
last as long as the glass remains broken (forever). A second interpretation is that everyone needs to remember those who are suffering even
during a celebration of such joy. Another interpretation is that the broken glass symbolizes the destruction of the second temple in Jerusalem.
Today, brides and grooms oftentimes add something personal and meaningful to the ceremony. Special readings, songs, vows or stories
personalize a ceremony and make it unique for both the couple and the guests.
